Fashion Week Explained: Facts Nobody Told You About

If you are reading this chances are you have heard the term ¨Fashion Week.” However, it’s also very likely that your vague ideas about it are wrong. Thankfully, you don’t need to panic, we are the best people to explain to you how it works.

Fashion Week, which takes place twice a year, is the busiest and most fun-filled event in the fashion industry. This is where the spotlight focuses on a designer’s creativity and vision expressed through her or his spring/summer and/or autumn/winter collections.

If you receive an invite to Fashion Week, that means you are one of the privileged fashion fanatics to view the next season’s collection up close and personal. The four most important fashion capitals in the world, New York, London, Milan, and Paris have their fashion weeks following one another. This results in a sort of “fashion month” considering all of these cities together. To say Fashion Week is hectic is an understatement.

Here are some facts that perhaps no one has told you about or probably have no clue about it at all. It’s time to discover something new today.

  1. Not all fashion shows take place in a single venue. Designers can present their collections wherever they want, however they want;

  2. Not only the biggest and greatest brands in the world present during the fashion week. Most shows are from emerging designers who are equally talented and innovative. Keep an eye out for them;

  3. Events can vary greatly. Many designers opt to do fashion presentations rather than a runway show. In these presentations, some are held in very interesting venues like an underground tunnel or an abandoned parking lot (liberate your imagination). Models usually stand in place, allowing invitees to get up close and appreciate the garments in more detail;

  4. Shows never start on time, however, in some shows, if you arrive too late somebody could steal your precious seat. Tell your Uber driver to go crazy on the road;

  5. Fashion shows last between 15 and 20 minutes. Being there feels like everything happens in a blink of an eye. The best part of the experience is meeting like-minded people from around the world, snapping photos and possibly meeting designers or some influential people;

  6. Not everybody dresses extravagantly. Some would go for a rather “chic” outfit that won’t call the attention of photographers capturing street style images. However, if you want to be featured on social media as the trendiest and swankiest, yeah, dress boldly;

  7. Fashion week is the best time of the year to attend exclusive events. They bring many opportunities to meet people and immerse yourself in fashion culture. Did we mention the treats and drinks which are all yours for the taking? Hello, champagne!

That’s it, we are keeping it short or we will be talking about this all day. Keep these cool facts with you so when it’s your turn to get invited to Fashion Week, you know what to expect. See you on the runway.
